Metamorphosis Cape

Campanadas 2022, Puerta del Sol, Madrid

Manuel Piña's dress is inspired by an insect, we can appreciate it in its volumes, its metallic mesh textile... I found the construction of the piece and the reference to the world of insects fascinating and mysterious. The cape communicates the idea of a new skin for a new moment, that precise moment of change between the present and the future. It is, in a way, a hopeful statement for rethinking our ways of inhabiting the world and relating to our surroundings. Something this requires a METAMORPHOSIS. Perhaps we can learn from other species, even those we, as humans, place in a lower hierarchy like insects.

METAMORPHOSIS is a celebration that gathers all beings, humans and non-humans, those we see and those we do not see, those who are among us and those who are no longer, to transform us together towards a present and a future that we wish to be more sensitive and careful between us and with the environment. With this winged cape, Cristina represents her own metamorphosis and, also, the metamorphoses to which we could all be heading.

For the design of the cape we look at the beautiful geometries of insect wings such as dragonflies and damselflies. The piece is made with recycled materials such as iridescent decorative sheets used in architecture and heat-susceptible textile fibers, transparent PETG, water-soluble sheets, resins, PLA and TPU filaments. Various artisanal and digital techniques have been combined such as digital design, laser cutting, molding and heat bonding, 3d pencil, hand sewing. Handling hours approx 470 and laser cutting 36.
